講師:Valda Vinson, Editor, Science
Valda Vinson氏は1992年にジョンズ・ホプキンス大学でにPh.Dを取得。その後、ザ・ウェスタン・ケープ大学(南アフリカ)シニア講師等を経て、1999年にサイエンス社に入会。同協会でAssociate、Senior Editor、Deputy Editor等として構造生物学、生化学、生命物理学の論文を担当。また、生物学、生命科学、社会科学分野を総括している。

9: 15 - 9:20 Opening

1. Before you Submit 9: 20- 10:10 (40min+10min Q&A)
This will discuss the journal requirements in terms of General Policies, Research Standards and Publication Policies (see overview slide attached) and will also discuss how to choose a journal to submit to.

10:10 - 10:20 Break

2. Life of the Manuscript 10:20 - 11:20 (45min+15min Q&A)
This will look behind the scenes at what happens to the manuscript after submission, with a focus on the review process at Science.

  • What do Science Editors look for in a manuscript
  • What is the Review process at Science
  • What helps - eg knowing your audience, good cover letter etc
  • The decision is made - what next
  • How to write a valuable review

    11:20 - 11:30 Break

    3. The Publishing Landscape 11:30-12:30 (45min+15min Q&A)

  • The challenges of multidisciplinary Research
  • Distribution of manuscripts by topic and geography
  • Dealing with large data sets
  • Access to the research

    Speaker: Valda Vinson, Editor, Science
    Valda Vinson joined the Science staff in 1999. Since then, she has handled research papers in the areas of structural biology, biochemistry, and biophysics as an Associate, Senior Editor, and Deputy Editor. She has also edited Perspectives and served as a team leader. As Editor, Valda oversees research content in the areas of biological, life, and social sciences. She earned a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1992. Before joining Science, she spent two years as a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa.
